Children and families

Children and young people can experience emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties that affect their wellbeing, development and family life. These difficulties may be worrying or confusing for parents, particularly when it is unclear what is causing them or how best to respond.

I offer psychological assessment, consultation and guidance to parents of children and young people. My approach takes account of the child's developmental stage, individual experiences, relationships and wider family circumstances.

How I can help

Some of the areas I commonly help with include:

  • Anxiety, fears, phobias and obsessive-compulsive difficulties

  • Emotional and behavioural difficulties

  • Sleep, eating and toileting difficulties

  • School-related anxiety and difficulties attending school

  • Family relationships and parenting challenges

  • Adjustment to separation, bereavement, illness or other significant changes

  • Physical symptoms, such as recurrent headaches or stomach aches, where psychological factors may be contributing

  • Habits, Tics, Tourette Syndrome and OCD - I have particular experience in working with children and young people experiencing tics, Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related habitual behaviours.

How we work together

Depending on the child's age and circumstances, I may work with parents on their own, with younger children together with their parents, or individually with older children and young people. We can discuss the most appropriate arrangement during the initial consultation.

Where helpful, and with appropriate consent, I can also liaise with others involved in the child's life, such as schools or other professionals, to develop a more joined-up understanding of their difficulties and how best to support them.

The aim is to develop a shared understanding of the child's difficulties and identify practical ways to support both the child and their family.

My approach combines careful psychological assessment and individual formulation with evidence-based psychological interventions, tailored to the needs of each child or young person and their family.
